Something about watching a great hip-hop performance always gets me fired up! Maybe it’s the pure energy, or the in-your-face attitude that has me in a rage.. Hmmm.. Come to think of it, The Rage dance studio brought a performance just like this to the stage during regionals and took home the award for Best Hip-Hop Performance of 2013 at the KARtv Dance Awards and Benefit Show in Las Vegas.
“The Rage Crew” came together a year before the awards show, with auditions taking place first, and then rehearsals of the routine, which was choreographed by WilldaBeast. As the weeks progressed, and each minute of practice quickly added up, this routine became greater and greater. In the words of studio owner Veda Burton, “after being nominated, the dancers felt very complimented. There were many amazing crews out there who were also nominated, and it was a wonderful feeling for us and them.” After winning, however, the feeling was quite humbling, Veda says. “We received votes and support from family, friends, studio members, and even YouTube fans.”
Winning the award for Best Hip-Hop Performance is a great feeling and quite an honor to Veda and the members of her studio. Reason being is, it “reinforces that they take hip-hop classes seriously” and then, “kids can bridge into the real world.” Veda pointed out, that oftentimes students aren’t prepared enough to get the kinds of opportunities necessary to succeed professionally. “With auditions, we want to make sure that hip-hop is refined,” she says, “to get our kids out there.” Not only are they ‘hip-hop’ dancers, but even more so, technical dancers.
On behalf of “The Rage Crew,” and her studio, Veda extends many thanks to Tiffany Burton Rojas (Dir. of Dance) and WilldaBeast Adams for their invaluable contributions, which helped this routine garner nationwide attention in the dance industry.
